Your Local Family Dentist in Alabaster

Dr. Joseph Zanthos and our Premier Family Dentistry of Alabaster Team welcome patients of all ages to join our dental family. We are devoted to providing comfortable dental care for your entire family with a commitment to service excellence.

We offer a wide variety of dental procedures to support the changing oral health needs of children and adults. Our goal is to help you and your loved ones enjoy healthy, beautiful smiles for life.

Dentistry for Children

Great smiles begin with healthy habits, starting at an early age. We see children in our practice beginning at age 3, or when your child can stay safely seated on their own in the dental chair.

Our children's preventive care program includes dental check-ups twice a year, along with dental cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments to protect your child's teeth and help keep their smile cavity-free.

During your child's preventive care visits, we will be glad to assist with tips on brushing, flossing and nutrition and answer any questions you may have. Learn more about children's dentistry.

Comprehensive Dental Care for the Adult Smile

How frequently should I see the dentist?

We recommend that teens and adults schedule regular check-ups and preventive care appointments with our dental office every 3-6 months. During these visits, Dr.  Zanthos and our dental hygienists will perform a thorough dental examination, including:

  • Assessment of the teeth to look for signs of tooth decay or tooth damage from teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching.

  • Monitoring existing dental work, such as crowns, bridges, dentures or implants to ensure they are in good condition and fit the bite properly.

  • Periodontal screening and gum measurements to look for signs of gum infection.

  • Review of digital dental x-rays to detect bone loss, tooth decay, wisdom teeth (third molars) or any abnormalities like dental abscesses or tumors.

  • Oral cancer screening of oral soft tissues to identify any unusual sores, patches or bumps that may require further testing.

  • Jaw joint and bite analysis to evaluate conditions that might impair your ability to chew properly, such as missing teeth or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD).

  • Medical history review and consultation to discuss any health or dental concerns, or changes you would like to make to your smile.

Recommendations & Treatment Planning

Following your complete dental examination, Dr. Zanthos will share his findings with you and provide recommendations to maintain your oral health and achieve your goals for your smile. If you have any restorative or periodontal treatment needs, we will discuss options with you and assist you with a plan to complete your services, along with the expected fees and an estimate of insurance reimbursement, if applicable.

We want our patients to enjoy worry-free smiles! Dr. Zanthos and Team can help you prioritize your treatment needs and phase your dental care with your schedule and your budget.

Periodontal Health

As we get older, our risk of periodontal disease (gum disease) increases. Periodontal disease is a dental infection that destroys gum tissue and leads to loss of jaw bone support for the teeth. Dental bone loss can cause teeth to become loose and eventually require extraction. And, because periodontal disease is a source of infection and inflammation in the body, it can be a complicating health factor for other illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.

Dr. Zanthos and our dental hygienists can help maintain your oral health with regular dental cleaning and periodontal maintenance visits every 3-6 months. During these appointments, they will check the health of your gums, review dental x-rays to look for signs of bone loss and clean all of the tooth surfaces. Learn more about periodontal disease.

Emergency Dental Services

If you are experiencing extreme tooth pain or mouth swelling, please contact our office right away for instructions. Swelling from dental infections can be very serious, especially for children. If you are unable to reach us, please contact your physician or go to an urgent medical care facility.

Unlike minor bruises and skin scrapes, dental problems do not heal on their own. If you notice a slight twinge of discomfort when brushing or eating, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with Dr. Zanthos as soon as possible. Early treatment can help you avoid dental pain (and more costly dental procedures). Learn more about tips for handling common dental emergencies.
