Joseph A. Zanthos, D.M.D.
A Birmingham native, Dr. Zanthos graduated from Vestavia Hills High School in 1997. His passion for the study of biological science lead him to Auburn University, where he graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Zoology and Biomedical Sciences in 2003.
While at Auburn University, Dr. Zanthos helped teach numerous lab classes and received a small grant to study ecdysone, a protein involved in insect development and reproduction. He also studied monoclonal antibody production in crickets. (This area of study has been applied in research, diagnosis and treatment of a number of diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.)
Dr. Zanthos' bioscience experience lead to a job in the quality control department at Southern Biotech, a local company that produces antibodies and immunochemicals for research purposes, from 2003-2004.
Dr. Zanthos admired the doctor-patient relationship and the opportunity to directly help people improve their health, so he chose to apply his education and experience to the practice of dentistry. In 2008, he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham. During dental school, he was the Student Government Association class representative, as well as the recipient of the Delta Dental Foundation student leadership award, which is given to students in excellent academic and leadership standing who exhibit a passion for dentistry.
Following dental school, Dr. Zanthos was a staff dentist at a non-profit dental center for Alabama's children. He loved working with children, and in 2009, he opened his own family dental practice in Alabaster. Dr. Zanthos continues to work with the non-profit organization on the weekends to help this underserved population.
Dr. Zanthos is committed to bringing the benefits of the latest technology to his patients. He has integrated CEREC® CAD/CAM dentistry into his practice to offer the convenience and customization of one-visit crowns, bridges and implant restorations.
Dr. Zanthos and his wife Emily have five children, Peyton 17, Paxton 16, Sam 12, Rhett 10, and Ivy 7. Along with spending time with family and friends and the family dog, a Sproodle named Murphy, Dr. Zanthos' favorite pastimes include church activities, hunting, fishing and college sports.
“We focus on developing a relationship of trust and respect with each one of our patients. I love seeing patients smile after treatment is completed, and, we have the great opportunity to see patients of all ages and watch kids grow up in our practice.”
